November 2023: Togashi prepares for the worst
On TV Asahi's Iwakura & Yoshizumi Show, Togashi reveals he has drafted four possible endings for Hunter x Hunter.
- Ending A, B, C: Three "real" possible endings, depending on how the story unfolds and how much time Togashi has.
- Ending D: A contingency plan. If Togashi dies before finishing, Ending D would serve as the manga's de facto conclusion. It features a time skip to Gon's granddaughter, named Gin. Togashi described it as an ending he'd "ultimately abandoned creatively" β meaning he doesn't want to use it, but prepared it just in case.
This wasn't about plot. It was about a creator confronting his own mortality while writing a story already obsessed with legacy, death, and what we leave behind.
"I have four scenarios for the ending... The fourth is one I've abandoned, but if something happens to me, it could become the ending."
β Togashi, Nov 2023 (TV Asahi)
"For the past two years, I haven't been able to sit in a chair. I've been drawing while lying down."
β Togashi, Jul 2022 (X/Twitter)
"Start over."
