The 2011 series covers everything the 1999 one did and the legendary Chimera Ant arc β the storyline most fans consider the series' peak. There is no story reason to start with 1999; treat it as an alternate take for after you're hooked.

Why there's no Season 2 of the anime (yet)
The 2011 anime ended in 2014 not because it was cancelled, but because it caught up to the manga β and the manga then spent a decade in stop-and-go hiatus. With the 2026 serialization return bringing a steady flow of new chapters, an anime continuation is back on fans' radar, but nothing has been officially announced. Manga is the only way to experience the story right now.
